Livistona chinensis is naturally found from southern Japan to southern Taiwan growing in woodlands on the coast and inland.
It grows in most well drained fertile moist soils in an open sunny position and is frost and drought tender.
The Chinese Fan Palm is grown for its pendant fronds and its small size. It is planted in small gardens or parks as a lawn specimen or used along borders. It is slow growing and establishes in 3 to 5 years and is long lived. It is also around water features for a tropical-like effect and in cold climates it is grown as a hot house specimen where it requires a bright indirect light position and should be planted in a loam based soil mix.
