This fan palm has a slender single trunk that is covered with leaf bases and matted brown fibre. It has dark green fan-shaped deeply divided fronds that form a rounded crown and the small yellow cup-shaped flowers appear in a long panicle in spring.

Trachycarpus fortunei is naturally found in south-western China growing in evergreen forests on dry slopes. It prefers a well drained moderatly fertile stony soil in an open sunny position and is drought tender but mildly frost resistant.
The Chinese Windmill Palm has been cultivated for hundreds of years and is suitable for small gardens and parks as a specimen. It is also grown in large planter boxes and used in group plantings for a tropical effect. It is one of the few palms that tolerates frost and can be grown in cooler regions.
