This rhizomatous palm has upright bamboo-like green stems that form a dense clump. It has drooping pale green divided fronds and the small yellow flowers are arranged in a long pendant panicle during summer and followed by black fruit.

It prefers a shaded to semi shaded protected position with high humidity and grows in moist sandy soils and is drought and frost tender.

Bamboo Palm is grown for its foliage and clumping habit. It is planted along borders for screening or used around a water feature for a tropical effect. It is also used as an understorey plant in parks and large gardens and establishes in 2 to 5 years and is long lived.
