This large rhizomatous bamboo has arching slender hollow pale green to yellow stems (culms) that form a clump. It has mid-green lanced-shape leaves that form a dense irregular crown and the small flowers appear in summer but are rarely seen.

Bambusa multiplex is naturally found from southern China to south-east Asia growing on coastal planes and on hill sides.

It prefers a well drained fertile moist sandy to light clay loam that is rich and organic and grows in a sunny to semi shade position and is frost and cold wind tender but drought tolerant.

Hedge Bamboo is grown for its foliage and its non-invasive habit. It is planted in parks and gardens along borders for screening or used as a wind break. It is also grown as a tall hedge or used in tubs and planter boxes. It is fast growing and establishes in 2 to 4 years and is long lived. Note:
The culms are up to 40mm (1½in) diameter and arching. The culm sheaths are very prominent and the auricles are small and pointed turning outwards the broad sheath blades, which have obvious lines of hairs.
