This common rhizomatous bamboo has arching slender hollow stems (culms) that are green or yellow and forms a clump. It has mid-green lanced-shaped leaves that are arranged along the stems and forms a dense crown.

Bambusa vulgaris cis naturally found in China growing on hill sides on the coast and inland. It prefers a moderately fertile well drained sandy soil with reliable moistureand grows in an open sunny position and is drought tolerant but frost tender.

This commonly bamboo is grown for it stems and clumping habit. It is planted in large gardens or parks along borders for screening. It is also used in pots or tubs and grown in planter boxes. It is fast growth rate and establishes in 2 to 3 years. The cultivar 'Vittata' is the most commonly used plant and has attractive culms. ID 651

Note:
The culms are up to 40 mm (1? in)in diameter and are arching. Culm sheaths are very prominent and the auricles are small and pointed turning outwards the broad sheath blades, which have obvious lines of hairs.
