This rhizomatous dwarf perennial has upright foliage and forms a small clump. It has erect pear-shape leaves with a dark green centre and pale green borders and the small white tube-shaped flowers are arranged in a spike that appears during summer.

Calathea makoyana is naturally found in South America growing in Brazil in the understorey tropical forests in well drained organic rich moist soil. It prefers a wind protected semi shaded humid position and is frost and drought tender.

The Peacock Plant is grown for its colourful foliage and clumping habit. It is planted in the understory of tropical gardens or planted along front borders. It is also grown as a container plant for indoor use and in cold climates it is grown in a glasshouse or conservatory. It establishes in 2-3 years and is moderatly long lived. ID 622
