This slow growing perennial has a below ground stem and forms a short trunk with a crown of long grass-like grey-green leaves. It has whitish star-shaped flowers that appear on a long scarp up to 4m (12ft) tall from late winter to early spring.

Xanthorrhoea mucronama is naturally found in Australia growing from the Sydney region in New South Wales and extending to Fraser Island in Queensland.

It prefers a well drained sandy-stony soil in an open sunny position and is drought tolerant but frost tender.

This Grass Tree is grown for its foliage and its habit. It is planted in small gardens or bushland settings. It can also be grown in pots and tubs or used in a rockery. It establishes in 2 to 4 years but will not produce a trunk for many years. It is slow growing and is not widely cultivated in gardens and mature plants are difficult to transplant. ID 547
