This deciduous tree has a rough grey trunk up to 1.8 m (6ft) in diameter with spreading branches that form an open crown. It has divided glossy green leaves and the small fragrant white bell-shaped flowers appear in a cluster during spring.

is naturally found in Australia from Ulladulla on the south coast of New South Wales to Atherton Tablelands in south-eastern Queensland. It appears in dense rainforest and is associated with woodlands.

It prefers a deep well drained light to heavy organic rich moist alluvial soils and grows in a semi shaded to sunny, wind protected position and is frost and drought tolerant.

Red Cedar is grown for its majestic habit and its foliage. It is planted in parks and gardens as a lawn specimen for shade. It is also used in moist gully plantings or rainforest settings.
