This large tree has a straight trunk with smooth mottled bark and ascending branches that form a dense rounded crown. It has dark green lance-shaped leaves and the small, creamy white flowers appear in a cluster from late winter to spring.

is naturally found in Australia growing on the east coast from southern New South Wales to south-eastern Queensland in tall open forests, were they form very attractive stands.

It prefers a shale based deep moist soil in an open sunny position but tolerates some shade when young and is frost and salt tolerant but drought tender.

Spotted Gum is grown for its forest form habit and its attractive bark. It is planted in woodland settings or parks as a specimen tree or in group plantings along roadsides. It is suitable for coastal regions and establishes quickly in 2 to 4 years and is long lived. The timber is use for construction and the tree in not suitable for domestic gardens. ID 489
