This long-lived large coniferous tree has a single trunk that may reach 8m (25ft) in diameter with soft red brown furrowed bark and spreading branches that form a conical habit. It has dull green needle-like leaves and produces ovate cones during spring.

Sequoia sempervirens is naturally found in North America growing on the Californian coast and is the largest living tree attaining a hight of 112m (367ft) tall. The trunk is covered in soft fissured bark that is up to 400mm (16in) thick and the trees form dense stands with only narrow paths between them.

It prefers moist rich well drained deep soil in an open sunny position with protection from cold winds and is frost and drought tender.

Coast Redwood is a large tree that is planted in parks, woodland settings and large gardens as a lawn specimen. It establishes in 4 to 8 years with an annual growth of 45cm (18in) and is long lived. It produces excellent aromatic timber that is used for railway sleepers, house construction. It is suitable for coastal regions but not for domestic gardens. ID 474

Note:
This tree differs from other conifers in that it will shoot from the base if cut down. It dislikes cold winds and low temperatures but grows successfully in Tasmania Australia, zone 7.
