This small tree has upright spreading branches that form a broad rounded compact crown. It has slender dark green pointed leaves and the creamy-white sweetly scented cup-shaped flowers appear in a bottlebrush-like spike during late spring.

It is planted along garden borders for screening or used as a specimen plant in a wet spot, tolerating temporary inundation. It establishes in 2 to 3 years and is long lived. This plant has a variable habit from shrubs to small tree and is used as a wind break or trimmed to form an informal hedge.
