This small tree has a twisted upright trunk with grey brown fibrous bark and spreading branches that form a dense rounded crown. The leaves are bright green and the scarlet to pink, orange and red flowers appear in a large cluster during early summer.

Corymbia ficifoliais naturally found in south-west Western Australia in a restricted area near the southern coast, south-east of Perth near Albany, growing on sandplains and hillsides.

It prefers an open to exposed sunny position and grows in moderately fertile, white or grey sand-gravelly or sandy loam that is tending acidic and is drought and frost tender.

The Red Flowering Gum is widely cultivated for its flowers and its dense rounded crown. It is planted in parks and small gardens as a specimen for shade or used as a street tree. It is also planted along borders for screening and the flowers attract bees and birds. It has a medium growth rate and establishes in 3 to 5 years and is long-lived. It may be difficult to grow in the humid eastern states of Australia and grafted varieties are available that are more suitable for different soil types.
