This large coniferous tree has a reddish trunk and forms a very compact, shapely conical habit in cold climates and a open loose habit warm humid regions. It has green-blue scale-like leaves and the male cones are crimson with green to brown female cones.

is naturally found in North America growing in California and Oregon in well drained moist fertile soils in sunny to partial shade wind protected position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

Lawson Cypress it is grown for its conical habit and is planted in large gardens or parks as a lawn specimen. It is suitable for mountainous regions and establishes in 4-9 years and is long lived. It is an important timber tree and is used in shipbuilding, furniture and joinery. There are many cultivars available and are planted in small gardens along borders or as a specimen plant.
