This shrub has upright grey branched stems that form a dense rounded habit. It has glossy dark green oval leaves and the small inconspicuous yellow-green flowers appear in a cluster during spring.

Japanese Box is grown for its foliage and is commonly used for formal or informal hedging, border planting and as a topiary specimen. It can also be mass planted along borders as a screen and establishes in 3 to 5 years. It is commonly grown in Japanese gardens or used as a bonsai subject. It is important to keep the plant moist during dry periods as it will suddenly brown off if allowed to dry out.
