Agave americana is naturally found in North America growing in the arid regions of northern Mexico but has naturalised in the Mediterranean region of Africa and Europe.

It prefers a very well drained moderate fertility sandy-stony soil that is tending acidic and grows in an open sunny position and is light frost and drought tolerant.

The Century Plant is grown for its sculptured habit and its resistance to drought. It is planted in arid gardens or large rockeries as a specimen and is commonly found in Mediterranean-style gardens. It is also grown in large tubs and planter boxes or used in roof gardens, requiring little care. It establishes in 2 to 5 years and flowers in 10 to 60 years.

It is suitable for coastal and inland regions and watering should be reduced during winter. It also has herbal uses such as a laxative, antiseptic and disinfectant. The sap from the leaves can be applied to bruises and the flower stalk can be roasted and eaten. ID 287

Note:
Care should be taken when selecting a site as this plant has sharp spines that can cause severe injury.
