This rhizomatous perennial has upright dark green grass-like 'V' shape leaves that form a large clump. The yellow-orange tube-shaped flowers appear in a terminal cluster that are held above the foliage on tall scape (spear shaped) from early to midsummer.

Kniphofia uvariais naturally found in South Africa growing along water courses and in grasslands. It prefers a moist but well drained organic rich soil in an open sunny position and is frost tolerant but is mildly drought tender.
