This clump-forming feathery palm may have single or multiple trunks that are yellow to grey-green with prominent rings. The fronds range in colour from yellow-green (in sun) to green (in shade) and the yellow saucer-shaped flowers appear in a cluster during summer.

Dypsis lutescens is naturally found in eastern Madagascar growing along river banks and in rainforests in well drained fertile organic rich moist sandy loams. It prefers a protected semi shaded to sunny position and requires wind, frost and drought protection.
Golden Cane Palm is grown for its clumping habit and yellowish stems. It is planted in gardens, commercial sites and parks for a tropical effect or used as a container plant when young.
It is suitable for coastal regions establishing in 3 to 5 years and is moderately long lived and in its native region it is a threatened species due to land clearing. In cool climates it is grown under glass or in a conservatory as a potted specimen requiring bright indirect light with watering reduced during winter. ID 267
