This deciduous small tree has an upright trunk with greyish bark and spreading branches that form a rounded crown. The broad leaves are dark green turning brown before falling and the pure white perfumed bell-shaped flowers appear in early spring.

The Yulan Magnolia is long-lived and is grown for its habit and flowers. It is planted in parks and gardens for shade or used in perfumed gardens and is commonly planted in Buddhist temple gardens.
