This large coniferous tree has an erect reddish-brown trunk and is pyramidal when young becoming columnar when mature. The pendulous branches have dark green needle-like leaves and the pendant cones appear in spring and persist on the tree.

Picea abies is naturally found from Scandinavia to north-west Russia and extending to Europe growing on the plains and in the mountains. It prefers a deep well drained, fertile moist sandy to clay soil in an open sunny position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
The Norway Spruce is a cool climate conifer that is planted in large gardens or parks as a specimen tree or used in groups as a wind break. It is suitable for mountainous regions and establishes in 5-7 years and is long lived. When young potted plants are grown as a Christmas tree and the dwarf forms are grown in rock gardens or as a bonsai subject.
