This large coniferous tree has an upright greyish brown trunk with horizontal branching that forms a pyramidal to conical habit. It has pale green pendant needle-like leaves and the female strobili forms a pendant brown cone during spring.

Pinus patula is naturally found in North America growing in highlands of Mexico commonly in pure stands at an altitude that ranges from 1,800 m (5,905 ft) to 2,600m (8,530 ft). It has also naturalised in many other countries from South America to Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and South-East Asiaand is planted in coastal regions or on mountains to an altitude of 3,000 m (9,842 ft).

It prefers adeep well drained, fertile moist light soil that is tending acidic in an open sunny position and is frost tender and mildly drought tolerant.

Mexican Weeping Pine is grown for its attractive pendant foliage and its rounded crown. It is planted in parks and large gardens as a specimen tree for shade or used in group plantings in woodland settings.

It is suitable for mountainous coastal regions and establishing in 5-7 years and is fast growing to 3m (10ft) but then slow to mature. It is grown commercially for its timber that is used for fuelwood or pulp and for the manufacture of particle board. Extracted resin is used to manufacture turpentine and rosin for use in paint.
