This large coniferous tree as a solitary grey trunk with horizontal branching to ground level forming a pyramidal habit with a pendulous leader. It has a glaucous green (needle-like) leaves and produces female cones during summer.

is a massive tree in its natural environment reaching 60m (180ft) tall with a trunk girth of 12 m (40ft) and is found in the Himalayas and Afghanistan at altitudes up to 3,000 m (9,840ft). The bark is silvery when young and becomes brown and slightly furrowed when mature.

It prefers a deep moist fertile sandy to clay soil with ample organic material and grows in an open sunny position tolerating drought, frost and snow.
