This annual has an erect compact habit with reddish hairy stems. It has divided dark green pubescent leaves and the blue, white or pink pea-shaped flowers appear in a raceme above the foliage from late winter to spring.

Lupinus hartwegiiis naturally found in North America growing in Mexico in moderately fertile well drained sandy soils that have reliable moisture. It prefers a sunny to a semi shaded open position with wind protection but is drought and frost tolerant. It is moderately deer resistant.
The Hairy-folage Lupin is grown for its colourful flowers and is mass planted for bedding displays or grown in rockeries and in cottage gardens. It is also used in containers establishing in one season and gives an excellent display. ID 195

When cutting flowers dip the cut ends in boiling water to prolong blooms.
