This deciduous to semi-evergreen twiner has woody stems that form a dense tangled habit. It has divided dark green leaves with oblong leaflets and the scented white trumpet-shaped flowers appear from reddish buds from early spring to summer.

Jasminum officinale is naturally found from the Middle East to the Orient growing in shrubland and forests or amongst thickets along rivers at an altitude from 1,200 m (3,937 ft) to 3,800 m (12,467 ft).

It prefers a well drained moderately fertile moist sandy to light clay soil that is tending acidic with a pH range from 5.5 to 7.0 and grows in an open sunny to semi shaded position and is frost and drought resistant.

Common Jasmine is grown for its fragrent flowers and twining habit. It is trained over lattice and a wire fences for screening or it can be grown as a loose shrub in open areas. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions and establishes in 2-3 years and is moderately long lived. It is also grown in pots and tubs or grown against a wlll with the aid of support.
