This herbaceous perennial forms a rush like clump that dies down during winter. It has three angular, pithy leafless stems that have terminal mid to dark green bracts that form a rounded umbrella-like head.

Cyperus papyrus is naturally found from southen Europe to Africa growing in sub tropical climates in wet habitats. It prefers silty wet soil but will tolerate most well drained, moderately fertile moist soils in an open sunny position and is frost, drought and wind tender.
Papyrus is planted for its foliage and clumping habit. It is used as a pond or watercourse specimen or for paper production in some countries and as an indoor plant in cool climates.
