Aucuba japonica is naturally found from the Himalayas to Japan growing in lowland and mountainous forests commonly in thickets along streams amongst rocks.
It grows in well drained humus rich moist sandy to clay loam and is pH adaptable and prefers a semi shade to shade position. It dislikes true tropical climates as it prefers a cooler winter and requires wind and frost protection.
The Gold Dust Plant is grown for its colourful foliage and bushy habit. It is planted along borders or on the shaded side of buildings as a specimen. It is also planted around water features for a tropical effect and is suitable for gully plantings. It establishes in 3 to 5 years and in cool climates it is grown in a conservatory as a potted specimen plant.ID 106
