Ulmus glabra is naturally found in northern and central Europe, extending to north and west Asia growing in woodlands commonly along water courses.
It prefers a deep well drained fertile moist sandy to heavy clay soil with a pH range from 5.0 to 7.5. It grows in an open sunny position and tolerates frost, air pollution and salt laden winds but is drought tender.
The Wych Elm is grown for its attractive foliage and spreading crown. It is planted in large gardens and parks as a specimen for shade or used in avenue-street plantings for foliage contrast. It establishes in 3 to 5 years and is long lived. There are several cultivars available with varying growth habit and foliage. ID 99
Note:
Care should be taken when planting around drainage pipes as it has strong invasive roots.
