This semi-deciduous shrub has spreading branches that form a rounded habit with oblong to lanced-shaped leaves that are mid green and turn red during autumn. The large cup-shaped yellow flowers appear from summer to autumn.

It prefers a moderately fertile well-drained sand-stony to clay soil with a pH range from 5.5 to 7.5. It prefers a sunny to semi shaded protected position and is drought tender but light frost tolerant.
St. John's Wort is grown for its large attractive flowers and its bushy habit. It is planted in small gardens or parks along shrub borders as a low screen or as a specimen in a large rockery.
