This rhizomatous perennial has upright grass-like leaves and forms a tufted habit with fibrous roots. It has a dark green long linear leaves and the tiny cup-shaped mauve flowers appear in a cluster amongst the foliage from late winter to summer.

is naturally found from Japan to China and Korea growing in moist shady places from coastal lowlands to forests in ravines commonly along streams at an altitude from 150 m (492 ft) to 2,800 m (9,186 ft).

It prefers awell drained but moist fertile sandy to silty clay soils and is pH adaptable and grows in a semi shaded to sunny position and is drought tender but frost tolerant.

Mondo Grass is grown for its tufted grass-like appearance and is planted along front borders or used as an edging plant in small or Japanese gardens. It is also mass planted as a ground cover and is suitable for moist to wet shaded positions. It establishes in 1 to 2 years from division and can be grown in pot, tubs and planter boxes.
