Daphne odorais naturally found in China growing in well drained, moist organic rich soil with a range of pH from 5.5 to 7.5. It prefers a semi shaded position that is not crowded with wind protection and is drought and frost tender.
Winter Daphne is grown for its fragrant flowers and is planted in small gardens as a specimen for early spring colour. It is also grown in pots and tubs but prefers to be in the ground and is used in scented gardens or grown on a balcony. It is very slow growing and establishes in 3 to 5 years but may take longer to flower. ID 91
Note:
It tends to be temperamental and dislikes being disturbed. Certain growers prefer a limestone based soil but it tolerates most soil types except heavy clay. Do not over fertilise or water during growing period.
