This clump forming perennial has fleshy roots and upright foliage. It has dark green strap like leaves and the blue or white funnel-shaped flowers appear in a rounded head that is held above the foliage on a slender stem during early summer.

Agapanthus orientalis is naturally found in South Africa growing in the Eastern Cape to southern KwaZulu-Natal.

It prefers a open sunny to semi shaded position and grows in most well drained moderately fertile moist sandy to clay soil and is light frost and drought tolerant and is fire resistant.

Agapanthus is an easy plant to cultivate and tolerates a wide range of conditions and neglect. It is mass planted along front borders or garden beds. It is commonly planted in parks and gardens along pathways or used in tubs and planter boxes. It is also regarded as a weed in many regions as self seeds readily and is difficult to eradicate requiring the plant and roots to be removed.
