This large deciduous tree has an erect trunk with spreading branches that form a dense rounded crown. It has large green lobed leaves that turn yellow during autumn and the tiny pendent flowers appear in early spring followed by ball-like fruit.

Platanus orientalis is naturally found in western Asia from Turkey to eastern Iran but has been cultivated for thousands of years and its true origin is difficult to determine.

It prefers a deep well drained fertile moist soil and grows in an open sunny position and is frost tolerant but drought and salt laden wind tender.

Oriental Plane is a large tree that is grown for its spreading crown. It is planted in parks and large gardens as a specimen for shade or in group plantings along avenues.
