Muehlenbeckia complexa is naturally found in north and south islands of New Zealand growing in open rocky places in coastal lowlands or low montane forests.

It prefers a well drained moist sandy loam but will tolerate most soils and grows in a protected sunny to semi-shaded position and is drought and frost tender.

The Maidenhair Creeper is grown for its dense twining habit and its foliage. It is trained over wire fences or lattice as a screen or used to cover posts or old stumps. It establishes in 1 to 3 years and is suitable for coastal regions. It is also grown in hanging baskets or used on wire topiary and if left unattended this plant may over run the garden. In open areas it forms a mounded habit and can be used as a spill-over.ID 77
