Gazania x hybrida is found in the lowlands to alpine areas in tropical Africa. The hybrid varieties are the result of crossing G.nivea, and G. linearis or other species.
They prefer a well drained sandy to light clay organic rich moist soil but will tolerate drier conditions with a pH range from 5.5 to 7.5. They grow in an open sunny position preferring a cooler climate but will tolerate high temperatures and are drought resistant but frost tender.
Gazanias are grown for their showy flowers and clumping habit. They are planted in small or cottage gardens along borders or in rockeries and mass planted as a ground cover. They establish in 1 to 2 years from division and are suitable coastal or inland regions. They are also planted in containers or the trailing varieties are used as a spill-over above retaining walls. Once established this plant requires little care and may be divided every 3-4 years to rejuvenate or contain.ID 65
