This striking rhizomatous perennial forms a dense leafy clump that dies down during late summer. It has arching dark glossy green lobed leaves and the 2-lipped white to purple flowers appear in a spike on an erect stout stem during spring.

It prefers a deep well drained organic rich moist sandy to clay soil with a pH range from 5.1 to 7.5 and grows in a semi shaded to sunny wind protected position and is drought and frost tender.

The Oyster Plant is grown for its flowers and clumping habit. It is used along front borders in parks and gardens or is grown in a shaded rockery. It is also grown in patio pots and planter boxes and used around water features for its lush appearance. This plant is regarded as a weed in New Zealand, as it readily self sows and parts of the roots produce new plants. Control methods include complete removal of the plant and the roots.
