This is vigorous climber has woody stems with adventitious rootlets that adhere to walls forming a spreading habit. It has dark green leaves and the small greenish flowers appear in clusters during late spring. The adult plant tends to be arborescent. (tree-like)

The Canary Island Ivy is grown for its spreading, climbing habit and its colourful foliage. It is mass planted as a ground cover or used as a spill-over above retaining walls. It is also trained to grow on walls or structures and establishes in 1 to 2 years. It can be grown in pots or tubs or can be trained over wire topiary. The cultivar 'Variegata'is the more commonly seen plant and is used for colour contrast in gardens but reverts to green in full shade. ID 56
