This small tree has a short trunk with several large spreading branches near the base that form a broad conical crown. The pinnate leaves are dark green and the fragrant rosy purple pea-shaped flowers appear in a cluster during spring.

Virgilia oroboides is naturally found in South Africa growing along the south-eastern coast from Cape Peninsula to George appearing in forest margins and thickets commonly associated with water courses from sea level to an altitude of 1,200 m (3,937 ft).
It prefers awell drained moderately fertile moist sandy to clay loam with a pH range from 5.6 to 7.5 and grows in an open to expose sunny to semi shaded position and is mildly frost and drought tolerant.
Blossom Tree is grown for its vigorous habit and its flowers. It is planted in new gardens along borders for screening and as a shade tree. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions establishing in 2-3 years but is short lived, up to 20 years. It is planted in fragrant gardens or used along water courses or for seaside plantings.
