This is a deciduous vine has slender woody stems with tendrils and requirs support to form a dense scrambling habit. It has a dark green divided leaves and the white-pink wheel-shaped flowers appear in a large cluster during late spring.

Clematis montanais naturally found from the Himalayas to central and western China growing along forest margins or in scrub on slopes and along streams at an altitude from 1,000 m (3,280 ft) to 3,800 m (12,467 ft).

It prefers a well drained fertile moist soil that is tending acidic to neutral and grows in a semi shaded to sunny position with some mid day shade and responds to mulching. It is frost tolerant but drought tender.

Clematis is grown for its attractive flowers and its climbing habit. It is trained over wire fences and against walls or over arbores, archers and pergolas. It may also climb over shrubs preferring shaded roots with sun seeking foliage and is suitable for inland and low-mountain regions.
