This long-lived vine has woody stems with tendrils and requires support. The lobed leaves turn crimson during autumn and the small flowers are followed by clusters of berries (grapes). It is the parent for most of the cultivars that produce good wine.

Hardiness zones 9 to 11

Vitis vinifera is naturally found from west Asia to the Caucasus and central Europe growing along riversides and in damp woodlands.

It prefers a well drained, gravelly sandy to clay loam that is moderately fertile and moist with a pH range from 7.0 to 8.0 and grows in a wind protected sunny position and is drought and frost tolerant.

Ornamental grape is grown for its foliage and its climbing habit. It is trained over pergolas or structures for shade or along wire fences or trellises for screening. It is also cultivated for its autumn foliage colour with the best leaf colour appearing in cooler regions. It is also grown for its editable fruit which is cultivated commercially world wide where the summers are dry and the soil is not too fertile. There are many cultivars available. ID 21
