PEST

NAME
Wattle Leafminer
Acrocercops plebeia

ORDER
Lepidoptera

FAMILY
Gracillariidae

Description of the Pest
Adults are tiny moths; larvae are cream coloured and similarly minute and the larvae have chewing mouth parts and feed on leaves.

Acacia podalyriflia

Appearance and Distribution of the Pest
Occurs on wattles in temperate to tropical regions.

Life Cycle
This insect has a Holometabolouslife cycle, ie. When metamorphosisis observed during the pupalstage.
Larvae pupate inside the blisters.

Period of Activity
Most active from early spring to late autumn preferring warmer weather.

Damage Caused
Larvae tunnel into the phyllodes of Acacia species, causing fine lines that develop into brown, longitudinal blisters. The epidermis dries out and the blister flakes off as the adults emerge. The leaves may also fall prematurely and heavy infestations can badly damage trees.

Susceptible Plants
Occurs on Acacia species, particularly trees with silvery leaves in temperate to tropical regions.

Cultural Control
It is difficult to control on certain species, but remove and destroy infested leaves or branches when first seen. Alternative (non-vulnerable) species should be considered for planting.

BiologicalControl
None known.

Chemical Control
Systemic pesticides will work while larvae are feeding.
Note
Always read the label for registration details and direction of use prior to application of any chemicals.
