Description of the Pest
The adult is a flat, black oval shaped beetle, up to 5mm long, with chewing mouth parts.

     

Appearance and Distribution of the Pest
The beetle may appear in large numbers on Hibiscus plants during warmer months. In Australia it is found throughout except the Northern Territory and Victoria.

Life Cycle
This insect has a Holometabolouslife cycle, ie. When metamorphosisis observed during the pupalstage.

Period of Activity
The beetle is active from summer through autumn.

Damage Caused
The adults feed on pollen and do little damage.

Susceptible Plants
Hibiscus and Magnolias are susceptible.

Cultural Control
Remove spent buds and infested flowers, if beetles are present in large numbers.

BiologicalControl
There is no effective natural control.

Chemical Control
Chemical treatments are not usually warranted.
