Bacterial Gall in Oleander
Pseudomonas syringae pl. savastonoi


Description
Bacterial problem associated with wounds in plant tissue.

Symptoms
All above parts of the plant are affected but it is more prevalent on the flowers and fruit where rough woody galls appear. The young shoots form longitudinal swellings that split open turning brown and on the leaves the galls tend to appear along the midribs.



Source and Dispersal
The bacteria are derived from other infected plants and are transmitted wind, splashing water or contaminated secateurs.

Favoured Conditions
It prefers warm wet conditions.
     
Affected Plants
Oleander species particularly the red flowering type.

Non-chemical Control
Remove and destroy infected plant parts and disinfect pruning tools between plants. Improve the vigour of the plant with fertilising and watering.

Chemical Control
There is no satisfactory chemical control.
