subsp. chamaephyton
This prostrate subspecies grows to 300 mm (1 ft) tall by 1.5 m (5 ft) and forms a dense cover with grey-green foliage. From late winter to summer it produces creamy white to pinkish-red or green tubulate flowers amongst the foliage.
It is planted in small arid gardens as a ground cover or used on embankments for soil stabilisation. It prefers an open sunny to partially shaded position and grows in very well-drained poor to moderately fertile sandy stony soils that are tending acidic. It is suitable for USDA zones 9-10
