Net-leaf Hackberry

This small deciduous tree grows to 12 m (38 ft) tall with a short trunk with grey brown warty bark that becomes corky with age and has wide spreading branches that form a rounded crown. It is simple leathery dark green ovate leaves up to 100 mm (4 in) long with entire to slightly serrated margins and the underside has conspicuous raised net-like venation. The tiny green male and female flowers appear during spring and are followed by small round orange to reddish-brown berries.

This deciduous shrub to small tree grows to 8 m (25 ft) tall with spreading or pendulous branches that form a rounded crown. It has ovate-lanceolate leaves that are up to 76 mm (3 in) long by 38 mm (1½ in) wide. The leaf upper surface is dark green and the almost glaborous underside is pale green (no raised veins) and the petiole is up to 6 mm (¥ in) long. During spring it produces greenish flowers that are followed by subglobose dark orange-red fruit. It is naturally found in New Mexico growing in the upper Sonoran region growing on moist to rocky bluffs and dry hillsides.
