There are many cultivars derived from Rhododendron obtusum, Rhododendron kaempferi, Rhododendron kiusianum, andRhododendron satenseand all come under the heading of Kurume hybrids. (See plant id 398)

'Album'
This compact shrub grows to 2 m (6 ft) tall and wide with glossy green elliptical leaves and produces masses of pure white funnel-shaped flowers during mid-spring. It prefers an open sunny to partially shaded position and grows in well-drained organic rich moist sandy soils that are tending acidic.
'Hinode Kirishima'
This compact dwarf shrub grows to 1.2 m (4 ft) tall by 1 m (3 ft) wide with small glossy green elliptical leaves. During spring it produces masses of brilliant red flowers in small clusters that cover the plant. It prefers a semi-shaded to full sun position and grows in well-drained fertile moist soils that are tending acidic. It is commonly planted in small gardens or rockeries as a specimen or trimmed to form a hedge.
'Shiro Kirishima'
This upright much branched shrub forms a compact habit and during mid-spring it produces white funnel-shaped flowers. It prefers a semi-shaded to full sun position and grows in well-drained fertile moist soils that are tending acidic. It is commonly planted in small gardens or rockeries as a specimen or trimmed form a hedge.
'Yaekirisima'
This evergreen shrub grows to 2 m (6 ft) tall by 1.5 m (5 ft) wide and produces masses of carmine red funnel-shaped flowers during mid-spring. It is planted in parks and gardens as a specimen or trimmed form a hedge and prefers a well-drained fertile moist acidic soil in an open sunny position.
