Sub-species
subsp. japonicum
This evergreen shrub grows to 1.5 m (5 ft) tall and produces red or bright yellow flowers during spring. It is naturally found from northern Kyushu to south-west Hokkaido from 1000 m to 2100 m (6,300 ft).
