This small deciduous thornless tree originates in Turkey growing on rocky limestone hill sides and in forests at an altitude of 1000 to 1850 m (5,600 ft). It prefers an open sunny to a partially shaded protected position and grows in most well-drained loams to heavy clay soils that are moderately fertile. It is planted in woodland gardens as a small shade tree and the fruit is up to 20 mm (µ in) long and can be eaten raw or cooked.

'Silver Sails'
This small tree grows to 4 m (12 ft) tall by 3 m (10 ft) wide with upright arching branches that form a compact domed habit. It has silver green foliage and produces large pure white saucer-shaped flowers with red anthers that are arranged in a cluster and appear during early spring.
