This tree is similar to the species but produces broader leaves that are softly pubescent particularly when young and is naturally found in China, Japan, Korea and Manchuria.

This tree has upright branches that form of a columnar habit with mid-green foliage that turns yellow during autumn before falling and has showy persistent red fruit. It is planted parks and gardens as a specimen and the bright red fruit is relished by birds.
