Sub-species
subsp.bakeri Baker's Manzanita
This subspecies grows to 3 m (10 ft) tall with the grey green foliage and purplish smooth bark forming an upright bushy habit. From late winter to early spring it produces pink urn-shaped flowers in clusters, attracting humming birds.
It is a commonly cultivated form that will tolerate heavy clay or granite-based soils and is drought and frost tolerant. It grows in USDA zones 7-10.
subsp. decumbens
This subspecies or is a naturally found at Sonoma County California at an altitude of 100 m (300 ft) and is a prostrate to decumbent shrub up to 300 mm (1 ft) tall with a glabrous foliage.
subsp. raichei
This subspecies is 1m-3 m (10 ft) tall with an erect to spreading branching that forms a mounded habit and produces flowers from winter to early spring. It is found growing on chaparral or serpentine in the interior Coastal Ranges at an altitude from 400 m to 600 m (2,000 ft).
