Varieties
There are seven groups of cultivated melons they include;
1)Cantalupensis group
This group produces medium size fruit that have a hard rough or warty rind and sweet orange flesh and are not commonly cultivated.
2) Chito group
Mango melons, Orange melons, Garden melon and Vine peach.
This group produces small size fruit that have a yellow or orange rind and white flesh they are commonly used in preservatives and pickles. The plants are also grown ornamentally.
3) Conomon group
This group produces globose or oblong fruit that have a smooth rind and crisp white or green flesh and are not commonly cultivated but I used in preserving.
4) Dudaim group
Pomegranate melons Pocket melon and Stink melon
This group produces small size highly fragrant fruit (orange size) that have a marbled rind and tends to be flattened at the ends.
5) Flexuosus group
Snake melon or Serpent melon
This group produces large size fruit up to 1 m (3 ft) long by 450 mm (18 in) wide and are curved or coiled and are cultivated as a curiosity plant.
6) Inodorous group
Honeydew and Casaba melons
This group produces large size fruit that have a smooth rind and very sweet crisp white or green flesh. They are known as Late melons and prefer a long growing season with the summers are hot and dry.
7) Reticulatis group
Muskmelon, Netted melon, Nutmeg melon and Persian melon.
This group produces musky scented medium or large size fruit that have a netted rind and sweet orange flesh and are the most widely cultivated.
