Cultivars
'Glauca'
This shrub has broad dark green leaves with purple-burgundy hues and upright stems that form a clump. It produces clusters of purple flowers during summer and grows to 1.2 m (4ft) tall by 800 mm (44in) wide. It prefers a protected semi shaded position and grows in well drained organic rich moist soils. It is planted in patio pots or planter boxes and is used around water features for a tropical effect.
'Soledad'
This small clump forming shrub has a glossy dark green linear leaves that are purplish on the underside when young. It produces purple flowers from winter to spring and is ideal as a container plant for semi shaded protected position. It is also grown as an indoor plant when young, and tolerates USDA zones 9 to 11.
Cordyline congesta Cordyline congestais sometimes regarded as a synonymous name for Cordyline stricta.
This species has a dark green linear to narrow lanceolate leaves with deep purple new growth up to 400 mm (16 in) long by 40 mm (1? in) wide and has serrated margins towards the base and grows to a height of 4m (12 ft). It prefers a semi-shaded to full sun protected position and is suitable for coastal regions.
This architectural plant is used as a specimen in small gardens and is ideal in patio pots or planter boxes. Once established it has a low water requirement (Scale: 1-drop from 3), responding to mulch and an occasional deep watering during dry periods, particularly for young plants.
